In Celebration of the International Day of the Orchid on Thursday 3rd September, plants@work Ambassador Ian Drummond takes a closer look at his favourite orchids that he has used on projects and events, from fashion shows to the Chelsea Flower Show, over the years, including his Signature plant, the Vanda Orchid.

Orchids make up one of the largest and most diverse plant families, ranging from highly resilient beginner houseplants to exotic varieties requiring meticulous microclimates. Orchids are often referred to as the Queens of the Plant Kingdom.

Orchids are a popular choice for gifting and considered to be the gift that keeps on giving! The retail value of Orchid sales in the UK is worth over £130 million.

They are also a popular choice with interior landscapers who often use them as an alternative to cut flowers in clients' reception areas by providing a rotational orchid service that gives a sleek high end look that welcomes visitors.

While most popular varieties thrive in bright, indirect light, each genus dictates its own strict watering schedules and temperature limits. 

Phalaenopsis Orchid (Moth Orchid)  

Description: Features flat, wing-like petals and broad, leathery evergreen leaves.

Light: Low to medium indirect sunlight.

Watering: Allow the potting mix to nearly dry out between waterings.

Temperature: Warm environments between 18°C and 29°C.

Vanda Orchid  

Description: Striking epiphytic plants with large, vibrant flowers and extensive aerial roots.

Light: Very high, bright, filtered sunlight.

Watering: Requires daily watering or misting due to bare-root cultivation.

Temperature: Hot, humid conditions above 21°

Dendrobium Orchid  

Description: Grows tall, cane-like pseudobulbs topped with clusters of small, delicate flowers.

Light: Bright, indirect sunlight.

Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth; reduce sharply in winter.

Temperature: Prefers warm days and distinctly cooler nights.

 Cattleya Orchid  

Description: Famous for large, fragrant, complex blooms used frequently in corsages.

Light: Medium to high indirect light; can tolerate some morning sun.

Watering: Must dry out completely before watering again.

Temperature: Intermediate climates between 15°C and 27°C. 

Oncidium Orchid (Dancing Lady)  

Description: Produces large sprays of numerous small flowers resembling dancing figures.

Light: Bright, indirect sunlight.

Watering: Water when the top half of the medium is dry.

Temperature: Adapts well to average household temperatures.
