Raising Awareness: Sun Safety

This May—coinciding with Melanoma Awareness Month—the Chartered Institute of Horticulture is launching a campaign to raise skin cancer awareness and promote best practices for sun protection within the horticulture industry. With over 17,000 cases of melanoma skin cancer diagnosed in the UK each year, raising awareness is essential year-round. Those who work outdoors—such as gardeners, growers, and landscapers—face an even higher risk due to prolonged exposure to UV radiation.

Why It Matters
“Excess exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which comes from the sun, or sunbeds, has been identified by researchers as the primary risk factor for developing melanoma. We know that melanoma is on the rise in the UK so it’s extremely important that anyone spending a lot of time outdoors takes particular care when it comes to skin protection. This includes wearing SPF30+ sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat as well as seeking shade in the hottest parts of the day” Susanna Daniels, CEO Melanoma Focus

Your Voice Matters – Take the Survey
To kick off the campaign, the Chartered Institute has launched a survey—supported by Melanoma Focus—to assess current awareness and attitudes toward sun safety among horticulture professionals. The findings will be compared with public data to help shape future guidance and initiatives.
 
The survey is open throughout February 2025 to those working or studying in horticulture, landscaping, and other outdoor professions with high UV exposure. Please take a moment to participate and share it within your networks.
